Okay, I’m guilty! Just read about this on Roger’s blog:

Ok people, time to get some basic terminology right. I’ve posted about this before, but here goes again: There is no such thing as an alt tag in HTML! It is an attribute which is required for images, and is specified in the img tag that defines an img element.

I guess I always knew this at the back of my head. But it’s just soooo much easier to call it the alt tag.

For us novice webmasters, getting the terminology right is probably not one of our main concerns. As long as we understand what it’s for.

I thought I’d just set the record straight just in case you DO know your terminology and came across one of my tutorials with the tag instead of the attribute ;-)
